Matt said in order to get your websites or a blogs on the top your site must contain unique keywords on your pages so that Google will read that and put on the snippets. Google view your pages on how it will relevant to the search. Google also view the quality of that content if that is reputable or spammy. That is the reasone why SEO people do onpage optimization in there websites because Google bot likes the good structure of the website.
Remember that in doing SEO, you have two types of visitors that read your site, that is the human reader or the people and the bot or the search engine.
