Here are 10 things it could do to improve itself:
1) Google needs to fix several advanced search problems. Many of them have been known for several months. These are things that should work. For example, having the Boolean operator OR work properly. Greg Notess points out many of them on his site. A feature that would be nice to have is the ability to turn Google’s new autostemming feature on or off. 2) Google’s page estimates haven’t been close to accurate for many months. I’ve been told that they’re, “just estimates.” However, can’t estimates be more accurate?
3) Advanced search documentation should state that longer html web pages (over 101kb) and pdf files (over 120kb) are indexed only up to those points. If what you need to find is past that arbitrary limit, you will not find it. Why won’t Google state that they have size restrictions?
4) The company should clearly state that they don’t show all backlinks when running a link: search.
5) Google needs to work harder to remove spam and many duplicates and near duplicates from the database. If that doesn’t work, how about clustering them underneath one representative page?
6) I’ve been a Blogger customer for a couple of years. I’m also supposed to have better access to customer service since I’m a former Blogger Pro customer. I had a problem about a month ago (it’s been solved) but I’ve yet to hear back from Blogger’s customer service. I’ve also heard from a few people that customer service for Google Appliance customers might also leave a bit to be desired.
7) I agree with Danny Sullivan, Google Bombing/manipulation is an issue that needs to be addressed.
When the company announces a new service it should work properly. Three weeks ago they announced a shortcut allowing you to enter an airline name and flight number. However, it doesn’t work for many airlines (including two major airlines in Google’s home state California and for some flights if it has a four digit flight number.)
9) In late August IEEE announced that Google was crawling abstracts of their publication database. According to the news release, the project was to be completed by September. That was five months ago and a very small percentage of IEEE material appears in Google. What happened?
10) In 2001 Google spokesperson David Krane told News.Com, “…we’ve firmly established ourselves as the No. 1 search service on the Internet, and this can be attributed to our laser-like focus on a search-only business model.” It’s obvious that this business model is gone.
Google’s Autolink Is Live By Trina L.C. Schiller
Google’s Autolink is in the news again. No, it did not go away,
it actually just got worse!
The Google toolbar is not new news to anyone who has been around
for a spell. The Autolink feature has already caused much
debate, and has webmasters in a tailspin as to how to protect
themselves from it. Well folks, there is some thing you should
know.
In The Beginning…
When Google made known its addition of the Autolink feature,
they had defended themselves, after receiving a ton of mail
about it from webmasters, by saying that the Autolink feature
had to be activated by the user. It was the individual toolbar
user’s choice as to whether or not to activate and use it.
Autolink is an enhanced service offered by Google.
Yeah, Right!
According to a recent article by Jim Hedger, Google has reversed
itself. They have made the default setting for the application
active, not inactive, as they had previously claimed.
What Google Autolink does is to add outside links to your web
pages, based on keyword relevancy. You, as a webmaster, have no
control over what links are added to your site. (Sounds like
copyright infringement to me.)
We online professionals, work our fingers to the bone, trying to
achieve the highest Google ranking possible, in our desire to
make it on the Internet. We work and re-work our copy, page
layout, and anything else we think will grab the almighty
Google’s attention. All this, just to have Google’s Autolink
take that hard earned visitor to your competitor’s site. And…
To add insult to injury, Google will probably make buckets of
money doing it! They claim to stand no financial gain through
this, but personally… I find that hard to believe.
Think about this:With millions of new Internet users coming
online for the first time, almost daily, how many toolbars do
you think will be downloaded from Google? Toolbars are candy to
newbies. These newbies are your potential customers, and Google
will be snatching them away from you, using your own web site as
bait!
The reality is that anyone with a Live Google toolbar in their
browser, will have to reset their preference to make Google
Autolink inactive, and most users will not know this.
So what can be done about this? Well, for starters, you can
protect your site pages with an Google Autolink Killer script.
Try to educate those you know. Let people know that if they’re
going to use the toolbar, (which I don’t recommend anyway…) to
turn the Autolink feature off. You can write to Google to
complain, but there is too much money in it for them to abandon
it. It’ll probably have to take a court action to get the thing
banned. (Anybody know a good class action lawyer?)
One thing to note about the toolbar itself; it is said to only
work in IE (Internet Explorer), so all the more reason to switch
to using Firefox, and get everyone else you know to switch too.
You’re finally getting serious about internet marketing and you’re wondering to yourself “what is the easiest and most efficient way to make income online?” Well, if you took a poll of people who make money online, I’m sure each person would have a different answer. There’s many options to choose from including:
1. Selling items on eBay – Often sellers will buy items at wholesale or from a dropshipper and then re-sell them on eBay for a nice profit.
2. CPA Offers – Cost Per Action – This method is great for making money quickly by just having your visitor fill out a free offer.
3. Selling eBooks – eBooks are very easy to sell because there is no stock to keep. Often, you will keep 100% of every eBook that you sell
4. Selling tangible items – Sell any type of tangible item that you find at a fair, garage sale, or that you have created.
5. Selling services – Gifted at design or writing? Sell your service online for a nice rate!
Or one of the most popular ways to make income online today, Google Adsense.
How exactly does Google Adsense work?
Every time you go to a webpage with advertisements on it, whether or not they are textual ads or banner advertisements, chances are they originated from Google Adsense. Google is basically the middle man between advertisers and webmasters. An advertiser will come to Google and say “I’d like to display my dog food advertisement on any webpage related to dogs and I’m willing to pay $.38 for each click you can get me.” Now, webmasters flock in and display these advertisements while trying to gather as much traffic and clicks as possible. The clicks turn into money and everyone is happy.
The reason why Google Adsense is so popular is because of its ease of use and how quickly one can make money using it. There’s virtually no restrictions as to who can display advertisements and the payments are always guaranteed.
The way to really make money with Google Adsense is to pick a niche that pays a good amount per click for each keyword. For example, the niche “investments” or “lawyers” or “insurance” can pay multiple dollars per click while a word such as “cell phone adapter” could pay 40 cents or less per click. By doing research before displaying adsense advertisements, you can save yourself not only a lot of time, but you can make a lot more money in the long run.
Webmasters also make the mistake of not displaying their adsense advertisements in those most appropriate places on their websites. Often, webmasters will not place the advertisement in a place where it is most likely to get clicked by a lurking visitor – instead they will put it in the easiest place or at the bottom of their webpage. The average visitor will stay on a webpage for less than 15 seconds, so you need to be sure that anything on your webpage that is put their to make money is being put in front of the visitor quickly.
Two years ago, Google presented a personalized homepage for account holders. This weekend, it officially rolled out personalized search results as a member service. Now appearing on Google account pages, a prompt-box reads: “New! Google services will now be more personalized with Google Accounts. Learn More.” Google account holders, (those with Google Toolbar, Bookmarks, Gmail, AdWords, and other Google member-based appliances) will now, by default, see results tailored to their own unique search histories whenever they are signed in to their accounts. Editorial Note: Drop by the SiteProNews Blog to read regular posts by two of the Web’s top writers, Jim Hedger and Jerry Bader, or listen to The Alternative on WebMaster Radio, the new weekly, hour-long live broadcast hosted by Jim Hedger, covering the world of independent search engine alternatives and, of course, developments at the Big 3.Personalization will subtly skew results in favour of documents or URLs visited regularly by individual users. If, for example, a user tends to visit a popular travel site when booking tickets and accommodation, results from that site are more likely to rank prominently in relevant travel related keyword queries.According to Google’s Web Help Center, “Personalized Search is part of Google’s ongoing effort to make your search experience more relevant to you. Using Personalized Search, you can: Get the results most relevant to you, based on what you’ve searched for in the pastView and manage your past searches, including the webpages, images, news headlines and Froogle results you’ve clicked onCreate bookmarks you can access from any computerPersonalized Search orders your search results based on your past searches, as well as the search results and news headlines you’ve clicked on. You can view all these items in your Search History and remove any items you’d like. Early on, you may not notice a huge impact on your search results, but as you build up your search history, your personalized search results will continue to improve.” Google is drawing user information from Google Search History, Google Bookmarks, and personalized Google homepages. A note on a Google Accounts page says they are not using personal information gleaned from Gmail or AdWords accounts. Though not used to affect personalized results, Google is also storing search results from Google Image Search, Google News, Froogle, Google Video and Google Maps in the Search History file of its individual users. Being logged into any Google account triggers personalized results. Also, signing up for a new Google account automatically enrolls users in the three Google products personal information are being drawn from. Users with privacy concerns can stem Google’s collection of data by entering their user account and clicking off the default “Enable Search History” box-option. According to Danny Sullivan, who wrote a detailed review of the sign-up and opt-out process at SearchEngineLand, “You can override the decision to have Search History enabled, but honestly, you’ll need sharp eyes. I completely missed that this was added as a default choice to the new account sign-up page. In fact, I missed it twice, as I tested the system by making two different accounts.” (source: Google Ramps Up Personalized Search – Search Engine Land) Personalization will alter the search results seen by unique users over time though people might not notice a huge difference in the first weeks. As a person’s search history accumulates data, search references will increasingly show frequently visited sites and references to sites that share common links with pages in the user’s search history and those of similar users. For the SEO industry, the implications of personalization are both stark and subtle. While the trend towards regionalization has limited clear standards for judging overall Google rankings for the past few years, the advent of personalized results makes the standard website ranking report somewhat useless. Personalization pretty much kills the ambitions of the simplest SEO shops. Successful SEO campaigns will nevër again be measured by strong rankings. SEOs will come to think about their services in a very different way than many do today. It’s no longer about making a document or site rank high on results pages, it’s now about making them rank well consistently. Optimization techniques for personalized search results will include expertise in site usability, visitor retention, traffic funneling, bookmarking and social tagging, all of which entered the unwritten book of SEO best practices over the past few years. It will also involve a stronger dedication to content creation, document upkeep and overall resourcefulness. Site usability has a direct effect on visitor retention. Websites with easily accessed, high quality information will likely see visitors stay on site longer and come back more frequently. Similarly, websites that move visitors from one page to the next in a logical fashion should (logically) tend to score better in personalized result sets. As Google records the number of times a specific user visits a site, those a person visits most often will score better placements in that user’s personalized results. Google Bookmarking, or prompting specific users to add a site or document to their Google Bookmark file, will become an integral tool for SEOs. Google draws information from Google Bookmarks to develop personalized sets of search results for each user. Google supports its own custom bookmark system and stores individual user’s bookmark files on its own servers. Getting users to add a site to their Google Bookmarks file isn’t as simple as adding a Ctrl+D Internet Explorer “Bookmark Us” link, though adding that link is strongly advised. There are extensions available allowing individuals to copy their IE or Firefox bookmarks into Google Bookmarks. A more direct Google Bookmarking method involves prompting visitors to include a RSS feed from your site to their personalized version of Google’s homepage by placing an Add to Google button on the website. Another direct method is to use the Google Gadgets API to create customized content-feeds that visitors can add to their unique personalized Google homepage. Please note, none of these methods actually gets a site or document into individual Google Bookmark files directly but serves to steer users towards including them. The last two will put site content directly on an individual user’s Google homepages. Does personalization mark the end of the spider? Absolutely not. Personalized results will rely heavily on data accumulated by Google’s bots as they analyze content between linked sites. The inclusion of one document in several people’s Google Bookmarks files will strengthen the chances that other documents sharing links from the one in several Bookmarks files will appear in those user’s personalized results. Personalization will have a beneficial effect on the ethical side of the link building industry, starting with an immediate growth providing social search link building and bridging services. As Google scans sites in its users search history and bookmark files, it will follow links it finds there. Many of those documents will also appear in that user’s search history or bookmark files. They will also appear in the search histories and bookmarks of other users with similar search histories. Those documents are likely to fare well in searches conducted by numerous other users because Google will spot the shared interest by following links and matching search histories against each other. Google will also be better able to spot and eradicate link sp@m by enabling Google to better analyze how individual users treat links as they come across them. Given the vast majority of users will tend to stray away from obvious sp@m, and links that do not get clicked will be less useful as time goes on, much of the incentive to try to manipulate results with spammy links is removed. In all, Google’s move towards presenting personalized search engine results will likely create a better search experience for its users. Though there are a wide array of privacy concerns Google will have to weave its way through and several assurances it will have to make, the creation of a truly effective personalized search engine ranks among the holy grails of geekdom for AI enthusiasts. This week, they took a big step forward. It will be interesting to see where this step leads us.

Found to deliver on our commitment to stop the review Google.cn search methods is difficult. We hope that the world has as many people can access our services, including users in mainland China, but through the discussions between the two sides, the Chinese government has been very clear that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirements. The search landscape is changing so fast this half of what we knew a year ago regarding search engine optimization and re&wshyp;selling is now obsolete, reports Greg Jarboe in his SEO-PR Newsblog. Jarboe is a usual presenter at the Search Engine Strategies (SES) conference and web search engine versus vertical searching the web (in search areas desire news) was one of the new searching tendencies featured at the San Jose SES.The growth of the shock search has only come something like in the last few years. According to Nielsen/Net ratings, in June 2004 CNN.com was still the #1 online news source through Yahoo not too far behind. By January 2005 Yahoo rose to #1 with 23 million readers a month and by June 2005 properties were pulling out in front with 29 million readers a month, dominating the online news ratings.News search is playing a better and better role in online marketing. Google has a news search section, as does AOL, MSN and Alta Vista. Sites desire Topix are drawing viewers looking for astronomical local news. Recent polls show too 77 percent of Internet users get the news online and it’s the rate one choice for news in the 18 – 54 year old age group. The Google News team made an interesting post titled “Psst… secrets of Google News exposed!” at official Google blog. The post explained about various Myths and facts related with Google news. Posted by Andy Golding, Software Engineer at Google, Andy also shared about how Google include and publish (rank) articles in Google news.
Coming directly to Myths and facts explained.
1. Updating article once it’s included in Google news helps in higher rankings.
False, According to Google the current Google news crawler doesn’t revisit the articles. Every article/news in crawled only once so changing or updating the article will not help at all in fact any changes you make will not be shown at Google news website. I hope Google news crawler will soon have the functionality of revisiting the WebPages.
2. Placing image next to article improves the rankings.
False, Google do include images in news results and displays them next to your news item, but it cannot read the images and rankings purely depends upon text accompanied in your news item and not on having images in the news.
3. Articles with images and video are not included.
True, Google crawler cannot read flash, videos, images and other such type of multimedia content. Thus it’s a fact that if you new release or article doesn’t contain any text accompanying images or multimedia content then it will not be included at all in news results.
4. Time is a major factor for inclusion.
False, Google crawlers are frequently looking for content related to current event and top stories. There are lots of factors that Google algorithms take into consideration and choose the best articles from the cluster for ranking. Publishing articles prior, after or in midst of any event don’t improve any chances of rankings at all.
5. Articles with Google adsense ads rank high in Google news.
False, well this is the most disputed topic among webmasters not only for Google news ranking but also for Google organic results also. Google had always denied this fact and according to goolge spokesman, “Using AdSense doesn’t have any impact upon our ability to crawl or rank your articles. We try to stay as objective as possible, and giving sites with our ads product a boost, well, that wouldn’t be very objective!”
6. Creating sitemap helps.
True, sitemaps may not help in achieving top rankings but they do definitely help in other way like meta data for our article, specifying category the news would be appear, specifying which articles should appear in google news etc.
7. Redesign or change in site structure may affect my coverage in news rankings.
True, any drastic change in website design or structure, layout etc may cause problems with crawling of your article and hence overall coverage over google new may be affected.

The fight for the planet is on. It is now fully proven, undeniably, evident that the earth is fighting for its life. During its short but deadly lifespan, human civilization has managed to place a devastating strain on the planet’s resources and health. It is now our duty to reverse this ill effect, even though it may be too late. There are thousands of ways people can contribute to the cause: from taking on older techniques such as recycling paper to utilizing newer technologies like fuel-efficient cars. I’d like to concentrate on one specific way through which people can help the planet- recycling computer equipment.Throwing away used networking hardware, monitors, hard drives, routers, RAM, webcams, batteries or anything of the like can have a devastating effect if the equipment ends up in our landfills. From nysscpa.org:Most of the environmental concerns with computers lie with the monitor, specifically its cathode ray tube (CRT). Each color monitor contains, on average, four to five pounds of lead, considered hazardous waste when disposed of, according to EPA standards. Computers also contain other hazardous materials, including mercury, cadmium (a known carcinogen), and hexavalent chromium (shown to cause high blood pressure, iron-poor blood, liver disease, and nerve and brain damage in animals). One way to get rid of old computer equipment is to donate it to one of the many non-profit organizations that will accept it. Many local schools and non-profits could greatly benefit from your old computer equipment. Two sites to help you donate are sharetechnology.org and cristina.org.If you believe that your equipment is beyond repair or reuse, one option for disposal is the full dismantling of the hardware. Many hardware manufacturers, such as Dell, Apple and HP, provide their own programs to dismantle and recycle old equipment. You can visit each of their respective sites to find out how these programs work. The final option is to seek out a reputable hardware recycling or asset recovery program online. One problem with the current computer sales environment is that consumers are goaded too frequently to buy upgraded or better computer hardware. This cycle creates more waste on the other end when the old equipment model is ’kicked out of the house’ by the younger model.Much of the time, experienced hardware professionals may actually be able to repair or salvage your old equipment. Instead of buying new equipment, you can save money and the environment by repairing, reusing, and recycling your hardware. There are several online vendors that will pay top dollar for your used cisco, dell, apple, HP, or any brand name computer hardware. This creates an ‘eco-system’ for computer hardware that benefits the planet instead of harming it.Some of these vendors provide repair and recycling services to resell the refurbished computer equipment at a lower price. In turn, businesses and consumers can then purchase a refurbished cisco or refurbished juniper router, dell server or mac powerbook at a discounted price. The key to this cycle is no new equipment needs to be manufactured, and in turn create additional waste. Many citizens, cities, consumers and corporations still do not know how to properly dispose of computer equipment, even though it has become so commonplace. It is integral that this ‘know-how’ become common knowledge.
